Positive Activities and Day Respite

Our Positive Activities and Day Respite provision is delivered by our experienced Family Support Workers and offers parents the opportunity of support at times of particular vulnerability.

The provision of early, targeted and effective support for a child (or family) either in need or at risk of significant harm can be the difference between needs being met or risks being managed/reduced. The provision of that support can also be the difference in how the case is managed… with families not accessing support (or the support provided being ineffective) being at risk of escalation to a higher tier of Local Authority intervention.

Support can take a myriad of different forms (practical, educational, instructional) and can cover a multitude of needs, risks, issues and disciplines. In each instance the aim is to put the child (and/or family) in a position whereby their needs are met and the carer’s ability to meet those needs on a consistent and permanent basis is facilitated.

Our team of Parenting Practitioners are experienced in working with and supporting children and families with a variety of different needs and in many different circumstances.

In particular, we offer Positive Activities Programmes for children and young people. These offer the opportunity for children to participate in, enjoy and derive benefits from activities that they may not otherwise have the chance to engage in.

The activities also offer benefits for the children’s carers in terms of respite which may be crucial for those who are socially isolated, otherwise unable to facilitate the child’s participation in such activities or just require the opportunity to focus on their own needs.

Activities are agreed in advance of the session taking place and outcomes are measured and reported upon to ensure understanding of outputs, progress and whether these are beneficial to individual children.

Our positive activities programmes can be:-

  • made available on a one-to-one basis or within a group setting
  • include all sorts of interests… sports, outdoor adventure/education, crafts, baking or visits to local attractions or clubs
  • run in the home or community
  • tailored to the needs of a specific child or groups of children
  • offered on a short or longer-term basis

Our programmes aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which children and young people are taught new skills, their confidence and resilience is promoted, positive interaction and communication with peers and others is encouraged and, simply, they have fun!

Such outcomes may serve to reduce instances of challenging behaviour, reduce the risk of placement breakdown and the corresponding need for escalation or, even, their accommodation.
